Skills & Experience : Clifton Slay is a recognized professional trail guide with twenty five years of off road experience in a multitude of areas to include: navigating and overcoming diverse terrains, driving techniques, safe and effective winch and extrication methods, vehicle preparedness, land navigation, and driver spotting. In addition, Clifton upon request will instruct participants on the proper execution and theory of these skills.    

Vehicle types: Clifton is well versed in guiding a wide variety of vehicle types, from off the lot 4X4's to exotic tube buggies. However your off road machine is categorized, there are trails and remote domains that are challenging, picturesque and fun.     

Seasonal: Most trails through the winter months in Colorado are futile, not recommended and potentially dangerous do to the many dangers of winter off roading. However day trips can be made to several areas at lower elevations. Southern Utah offers a much wider variety of areas that are accessible year round. Winter days are also shorter, so expect to cover less ground. If you choose to schedule guiding services between the months of October and April, expect that you may be required to have additional equipment to include:

* Personal cold weather gear 

* Portable shelter         

* First aid                                           

* Food provisions                                     

* Fire starting material

* Excessive recovery equipment

Overnight camping: Many trails allow for camping, and some of them demand it due to their distance and seclusion. Overnight odysseys can be scheduled, although we do not provide catering, tent set up or pillow fluffing. If you would prefer an off road excursion that includes hotels, cabins or some form of indoor lodging. We can accommodate you by limiting the experience to day trips in a more focused area.  

Permits and fees: Outside of the guiding expenditure many areas especially in Utah require permits and varied fees for large organized groups and media entities. Clifton is experienced at achieving the permits and knowing what additional private or government fees may be applied. These costs are typically minimal but required, furthermore can sometimes take several months to acquire.   

Minimum equipment: Vehicle and equipment requirements will largely depend on the difficulty of the terrain and the distances covered. However, working 4 wheel drive, jack, working seat belts,  spare tire and a recovery strap are basic requirements. For groups utilizing rental Jeeps or Hummers, trail difficulty may be limited by provided equipment and group size. 

Photography and video: If you want to capture your off road adventure in the back country, professional photography and video is available during the trip. This is offered for both private and corporate clients. This service is provided and coordinated by American Rock Rods, and must be requested at the time of scheduling.
